“Every moment is an organizing opportunity, every person a potential activist, every minute a chance to change the world.” – Dolores Huerta
In this ever-shifting political climate, we are witnessing injustice unfold as immigrants all over the nation are being targeted. Our communities are under attack by shifting policies and practices to surveil, arrest, detain, deport, and silence immigrants and the people who support them. (Source: Immigrant Defense Project)
We Have Power’s central mission is to uplift and amplify the organizations leading boots-on-the-ground efforts to protect our communities—especially now, as our democracy stands at a dangerous crossroads. Join the fight for justice in a time of deep injustice, and USE YOUR POWER.
The time to act is now. Even if you are just one person making one change, never underestimate the power of a single action. History is shaped by a series of small actions—each one igniting change that reshapes the world. Here’s how you can get involved, one small action at a time:
- The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights Los Angeles (CHIRLA)’s mission is to achieve a just society, fully inclusive of immigrants. The organization was founded in 1986 to advance the human and civil rights of immigrants and refugees. CHIRLA became a place for organizations and people who support human rights to work together for policies that advance justice and full inclusion for all immigrants. The organization has become one of the largest and most effective advocates for immigrant rights, organizing, educating and defending immigrants and refugees in the streets, in the courts, and in the halls of power. - The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is a non-profit, non-partisan organization founded in 1920 that works to defend and protect individual rights and personal freedoms guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. - United We Dream is the largest immigrant youth-led organization in the nation. The organization is a nonpartisan network made up of over 100,000 immigrant youth and allies and 55 affiliate organizations in 26 states. United We Dream organizes and advocates for the dignity and fair treatment of immigrant youth and families, regardless of immigration status. LEARN HOW YOU CAN JOIN THEIR ACTION NETWORK
- The Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC)’s mission is to improve immigration law and policy, expand the capacity of legal service providers, and advance immigrant rights. The Red Cards were created to help people assert their rights and defend themselves against constitutional violations. Knowing and asserting rights can make a huge difference in many situations, such as when ICE agents go to a home. Red cards provide critical information on how to assert these rights, along with an explanation to ICE agents that the individual is indeed asserting their rights. - The National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC) defends the rights of immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. Their advocacy and legal services teams keep families together, free people from the dangers of immigrant detention, and prevent asylum seekers and long-time community members from being deported based on unjust laws and illegal government actions. - Detention Watch Network (DWN) is a national coalition building power through collective advocacy, grassroots organizing, and strategic communications to abolish immigration detention in the United States. The Communities Not Cages campaign amplifies the longstanding local organizing of DWN members, advocates, and allies across the country, while building a nationally coordinated strategy to stop the expansion of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention, shut down facilities and ultimately abolish the detention system in its entirety.
